How to Keep Swamp Coolers Up and Running
Many homes in the area are equipped with swamp coolers. If yours is one of them, there are several steps you can take in order to ensure that they work their best to keep you as comfortable as possible.
How Swamp Coolers Work
Also known as evaporative coolers, swamp coolers cool a space by adding water to the air as a fine cool mist. This is done by pulling in dry hot air and having it pass through a moist cooling pad. The pad absorbs water from a reservoir or pan that you will need to fill every so often. The hot dry air is then sent through the cooling pad with the use of a high-powered fan. It is then infused with tiny water droplets that bring the overall air temperature down by as much as 20 degrees. The cooled air is then released with a gentle breeze.
Swamp Cooler Maintenance
In order to keep your swamp cooler up and running, there are several things that you need to do. Since the temperature has already begun to climb, you should have already removed the panels and cleaned out any debris in the water pan. This makes it so that clean water gets to the pads and does not get gummed up by leaves, dust, or other debris. Also be sure that the cooler pads are in good shape. If they look worn or ratty, replace them. The cooler will run at its most efficient when the pads are clean. You also need to make sure that you have a fresh air supply. This can be done by leaving a window or a door open in the cooling space. If you do not do this, humidity will build up and eventually raise the temperature. A continuous fresh air source prevents this.
When summer ends, be sure to clean the buildup of mineral deposits so that they do not harden over the winter and become hard to remove. You also need to clean out the tray at the bottom of the cooler and drain the water completely. In order to prevent freezing of the cooler’s water line, it is best to disconnect it from the cooler and blow out the water. Once complete, cover the unit with a tarp or form-fitted cover to protect it.
Professional Swamp Cooler Maintenance
In addition to the things you can do for your swamp cooler, you should also have it professionally serviced at least once a year. A technician can come out and check the fan belt to see if it has adequate tension. If it is visibly sagging then it definitely needs to be replaced. He or she will also lubricate the blower assembly bearing and the motor and test if the cooler pads are getting used evenly. If cracks or holes exists he or she will be able to fix them, as well.
